Baxter Theatre
The Baxter Theatre was opened on 1 August 1977.
A bequest was made to the University of Cape Town in 1960, by the
late Dr W Duncan Baxter, Mayor of Cape Town and Chairman of the Council of the
University, in order to establish a theatre in Cape Town.
Architects Jack Barnet and Leslie Boer designed this spacious
theatre complex, calling on advice from Thomas Münter and Rudolph Biste of Berlin for
the design of the stages.
The Sphinx, a statue by Bruce Arnott, is situated outside the
theatre complex. The Baxter Theatre logo is a stylized impression of this statue. The
Baxter Theatre is situated on Main Road. Parking for patrons can be accessed from Burg
Street which runs out of Main Road.
